One more time with feeling: FINAL CRUCIBLE ESSAYS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY NIGHT (11/23) AT 11:59PM. No one stayed after school to see me today so I assume there are no issues with this due date for anyone. If you'd like to use the essay guide I handed out in class today, download it below. Looking forward to reading your essays! --Mr. Fantini
ROUGH DRAFT OF ESSAY DUE MONDAY FOR PEER EDITS. Today in class we did some practice on formal voice. Voice and Formatting checklists below:
Formal Voice Practice
Today in Class: Today in class, we took a step back and reviewed exactly what I'm looking for in a strong body paragraph. If it's helpful, you can think of each body paragraph as a kind of frame for a quote from The Crucible that supports your thesis. Follow this recipe, and I guarantee you'll be on your way to a strong body paragraph:
For Example... (Thesis: The Crucible demonstrates the danger of authority by depicting authority figures as power hungry and cruel.) Topic Sentence: The Crucible shows the danger of authority through Judge Danforth’s refusal to delay John Proctor’s execution. Introduce your Evidence: As the witch hunt hysteria escalates, Danforth, the governor of the colony, comes to Salem to act as a judge in the trials. Danforth is a powerful man who seems more interested in asserting his authority than in the well being of the town or its people. Quote: When begged to delay the execution of John Proctor, Danforth explodes, “I will not receive a single plea for pardon or postponement… the names of these seven are given out, and the village expects to see them die this morning. Postponement now speaks a floundering on my part” (Miller, 129). Analysis: Danforth refuses to hear any argument for mercy or doubt in his guilty verdict. He is clearly more concerned with convincing the townspeople of his strength and authority than he is with the guilt or innocence of the prisoners. In Danforth, Miller shows the cruelty that authority figures can carry out to protect their power. Homework Due by midnight tonight, complete at least one strong body paragraph, following this format. Start with the quote you'll be using in that body paragraph. If it helps, start off with your essay set up like this, and use your thesis to create your body paragraph: Good luck. Send me an email if you have any questions. Remember, I'm at homework club after school tomorrow in room 209. That's a great opportunity to get good feedback on your writing.
Happy Sunday, y'all. All submitted theses have gotten feedback, but I've received less than half of the class's thesis drafts.
This essay will be the biggest grade of the marking period. Do not fall behind on it. If you did not do well in the first marking period and you let yourself get a bad grade on this essay, you will have dug yourself a deep hole for your yearlong average. If you are having any kind of trouble, please, let me know. I'm available for extra writing help before and after school, but you need to let me know. See you all tomorrow, Mr. Fantini Hey, all. As a follow up to our conversations about the SEPTA strike and its impact on Election Day: a Clinton PAC has sponsored an Uber and Lyft promotion to get people to the polls for FREE if the strike lasts through election day. Pass this info along to friends, family, strangers--anybody who may have been counting on SEPTA to get to the polls.
billypenn.com/2016/11/05/free-uber-and-lyft-rides-to-philly-polls-on-election-day-thanks-to-a-clinton-pac/ See you tomorrow! --Mr. Fantini Homework:
Reminder! Due Monday, is your first draft of your thesis. We will workshop these, but I need to see that you've started thinking about your essay. Today in class, I modeled how I start writing an essay: I suggest you start pulling out evidence and collecting it in a word document or on a sheet of paper. This will help you develop your claim. It goes without saying that you should have finished reading The Crucible by now! You need to be ready to take your quiz as soon as you get back. Today in Class I distributed the topics for the end of unit essay on The Crucible. Hopefully next week (pending SEPTA stuff) we will be beginning a writing workshop for this essay, but, in the mean time, review the topics and begin drafting a thesis statement. I will be checking for first drafts of theses at the start of class on Monday. Folks who haven't taken the quiz: you will be taking it the day you get back. Everyone should have finished reading The Crucible by now! If you haven't, that is your top priority.
Today in Class:
Today, we took our Unit 2 Vocab Quiz. This featured a few reading check questions for Act IV of The Crucible. If you were absent today, be prepared to make up this quiz upon your return. Tomorrow, I will pass out essay topics for The Crucible, so make sure you've finished the book so you can begin working on your thesis. |
